Tools in the Accessibility menu

Open the Accessibility button in the header. Your choices are saved on your own device.

  • Text size: four sizes, up to 150%.
  • Easy-read font: switches to Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for legibility.
  • Extra spacing: wider lines, words and letters.
  • High contrast: black and white with stronger borders and underlined links.
  • Reduce movement: turns off animations and transitions.
  • Read aloud: choose a voice and speed.

Read aloud

Each practice question has a Listen button that reads the question and its answer options. After you answer, you can listen to the explanation. Maths symbols are read as words (for example, “times” and “divided by”), and letter codes are read letter by letter.

Voices come from your device and browser, so they sound different on different devices. If a voice is labelled “online” in the menu, your browser may send the text to its own speech service. Choose a voice without that label to keep the text on your device.

Rough working area

Maths and reasoning questions have an optional squared-paper area for working things out. Draw with a finger, Apple Pencil or mouse. It is never required to answer a question, and nothing you draw is saved or sent anywhere.

Also built in

  • Works with a keyboard, with visible focus outlines and a skip-to-content link.
  • Labelled buttons and form fields, and status messages announced to screen readers.
  • Text and colours checked for contrast, in light and dark themes.
  • Layouts that adapt to phones, tablets and computers.

Our aim and its limits

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA. We have not yet had an independent accessibility audit, so there may be gaps. The rough working area needs a pointer (finger, pen or mouse), and the questions are visual text only for now.

Tell us what would help
